Possibly the largest single piece underground tank ever manufactured in Australia, transporting it proved to be a logistics challenge. With a massive 490,000 litre capacity, this enormous tank was manufactured as a single fiberglass piece, weighing in at 24 tons, and measuring 4.95m diatmeter x 24m long.
Unable to be transported by road from our factory in Geelong to Sale, it was instead transported by sea. Initially trucked to Geelong Port during the night to avoid traffic congestion, the tank was then lowered by crane on to a barge and shipped along the bass strait.
The tank was then transported by truck from South Gippsland to the RAAF site, with 15 sets of power lines being raised to allow the tank passage. The one piece construction made it far easier to install and allowed the area to remain trafficable. It was an exciting moment for the team to see such a challenging job completed successfully.
