Rainwater/Potable Treatment Plant for Footscray Hospital

Protex Water designed and manufactured a large Rainwater/Potable Treatment Plant for the new $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital in Victoria’s western suburbs. The new hospital spans five buildings, employs over 5,000 people and will treat an up to 15,000 extras patients per year.

Managing a flow rate of up to 5 L/s of rainwater harvested onsite, the treated water is reused as potable water top up across the hospital facilities. The treatment process includes AFM Filtration for suspended solids removal, Activated Carbon Media for organics treatment, and UV Sterilisation and Chlorine Dosing to remove bacteria and viruses.

A major design challenge was fitting the system within the limited available space on one of the Hospital’s basement levels. We accommodated this requirement by creating a unique ‘L – shaped’ skid design that also provided adequate space to undertake maintenance.

The system incorporates high quality componentry including twin Hallett validated UV’s, Activated Carbon filters with a long empty bed contact time, Grundfos pumps, and with Endress & Hauser instrumentation.
