Protex Water was commissioned to design, supply, install and commission a ChemSphere Effluent Decontamination System (EDS) for Westmead Hospital. Built to achieve AS2243 PC2 Large Facility and OGTR PC2 Large Facility requirements, the EDS plant was designed to treat 10,000 L/day of PC2 GMP area wastewater, treating multiple batches with Sodium Hydroxide dosed at high pH levels for 60 minutes. The treated wastewater is then neutralised with hydrochloric acid to ensure safe and compliant discharge to trade waste.
The ChemSphere EDS includes a 5,000 L effective capacity tank for the collection of the PC2 GMP area wastewater and transfer via duty/standby diaphragm pumps to the Effluent Decontamination System. The system also includes two chemical “kill” tanks comprising effective 1,250 L capacity for each tank, duty/standby diaphragm chemical pumps for discharge to trade waste, chemical dosing systems, duty/standby instrumentation and the tank vents fitted with HEPA filtration for additional safety.
The plant has a high level of automation with a user-friendly HMI touch screen providing total system management, with fingertip access to plant performance indicators and controls and remote access of the system via BMS.
