Protex Water were contracted to design and build two treatment plants to remove Total Nitrogen from tunnelling wastewater on the Snowy Hydro 2.0 site within the Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains…
Managing a flow rate of up to 30 L/s with an achieved effluent level of <0.36 mg/L NT, the system also needed to allow for fluctuations in seasonal wastewater levels. The system was designed after extensive site pilot trials to guarantee our process design and to best incorporate existing process streams within the site plan.
Due to tight space constraints of the site, we opted for a fully engineered stacked container solution incorporating two base containers and a single upper-level container, including an external safety staircase for upper-level access.
Additionally, due to the Alpine location above the snow line, the plants were specially insulated with heating and pipe heat tracing to ensure reliable year-round operation.
The Total Nitrogen treatment system featured large filter vessels containing specialised Ion Exchange Media and was supplied with a full management system offering remote monitoring and control.
